Do All Roads Lead to Rome?

Bidirectional Localization MishapBidirectional support is one of the toughest internationalization (i18n) issues that face software publishers, localizers and translation service providers.

The ability to enter letters, numbers and symbols consistently from left to right as we do with most languages may not be very demanding. But the ability to enter Arabic, Farsi or Hebrew letters from right to left, while also allowing inserting Latin letters, Indian or Arabic  numerals and symbols from left to right within the same line, can be a challenging undertaking while correctly developing, localizing and using authoring systems and software applications.

As broadband continues its relentless expansion around the world and as PayPal and Skrill become available to citizens of all nations, the world will become flatter in 2012 and a larger pool of translators will awake to the handiness of hard-currency-paying-jobs from translation service vendors, expanding the supply of capable professional translators to all. This will apply downward price pressure on translation rates for certain languages.

7c/word Translation Services!

Have you seen offers on the web promising delivering within the day (or even the hour!) the best quality translation at 7c per word? If you haven’t it is not hard to find half a dozen of them online.

These sites claim immediate access to thousands of translators and hundreds of languages at a fraction of the cost that professional translators usually charge other professional translation service providers. For the experienced person that has performed translation services, this is simply an oxymoron. There are hundreds of reasons that we deal with on a daily basis that can disprove their claims. For simplicity sake, here are three of them.

Red on yellow, deadly fellow

King SnakeA recent encounter with a King snake reminded me of the rhyme:
Red on yellow, deadly fellow
Red on black, venom lack

Phew! I am safe, I thought to myself. Glad I know the rhyme to tell apart a King snake, which is harmless, from a Coral snake, which has one of the most potent venoms in North America!

As the manufacturer of the Coral snake anti-venom ceased to produce it due to low financial returns, it has become more important for people to remember this rhyme to stay away from Coral snakes.

So, to help our readers south of the border avoid the Coral snake lethal bite, we decided … Read More

Broaden Your Global Footprint Without Tripping!

Global FootprintWinning the world is best done the old-fashioned way: Divide and conquer! All companies, no matter how large or small, have constraints that they need to operate within.

If your product is offered and supported in English, you are in luck. With the product as-is or with minor changes, you can target the entire English-speaking world. This includes the USA, United Kingdom, Canada, – first, sixth, and tenth in world GDP – as well as Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and others. According to the International Monetary Fund, English-speaking countries contributed $20 trillion to the $63 trillion world GDP in 2010. This is roughly 32% of the world market!

But this … Read More

Automating translation processAs translation consumers look for ways to reduce translation costs, the quality conscious is turning to a professional translation company offering automation in the process without removing the human element that is the most essential to the success of the project–the translator!

Here are 10 ways a translation company can eliminate costs by using automation without jeopardizing quality.

1. Quote: Automating the quote requires automating file prep. This requires the ability to correctly parse files, regardless of formats to identify the needed data. 9-11 – We will never forget!

9-11 – We will never forget!Ten years ago today, our country was ruthlessly attacked by a band of terrorists intent on causing harm and suffering to as many innocent people as they could touch. The ripple effect of the mayhem that followed continue to propagate around the world till this date.

Their atrocious acts were very pronounced. But the message they delivered was at best muddled. Why did they go through this horrific act? What were they trying to accomplish? Did they perceive tyranny in our freedom? Did they see … Read More
