Red on yellow, deadly fellow

King SnakeA recent encounter with a King snake reminded me of the rhyme:
Red on yellow, deadly fellow
Red on black, venom lack

Phew! I am safe, I thought to myself. Glad I know the rhyme to tell apart a King snake, which is harmless, from a Coral snake, which has one of the most potent venoms in North America!

As the manufacturer of the Coral snake anti-venom ceased to produce it due to low financial returns, it has become more important for people to remember this rhyme to stay away from Coral snakes.

So, to help our readers south of the border avoid the Coral snake lethal bite, we decided … Read More

Stay the Course, Do Over, or Out?

Wind in the backWhen was the last major decision you made? Do you pray for a mulligan? Broaden Your Global Footprint Without Tripping!

Global FootprintWinning the world is best done the old-fashioned way: Divide and conquer! All companies, no matter how large or small, have constraints that they need to operate within.

If your product is offered and supported in English, you are in luck. With the product as-is or with minor changes, you can target the entire English-speaking world. This includes the USA, United Kingdom, Canada, – first, sixth, and tenth in world GDP – as well as Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and others. According to the International Monetary Fund, English-speaking countries contributed $20 trillion to the $63 trillion world GDP in 2010. This is roughly 32% of the world market!

But this … Read More

Automating translation processAs translation consumers look for ways to reduce translation costs, the quality conscious is turning to a professional translation company offering automation in the process without removing the human element that is the most essential to the success of the project–the translator!

Here are 10 ways a translation company can eliminate costs by using automation without jeopardizing quality.

1. Quote: Automating the quote requires automating file prep. This requires the ability to correctly parse files, regardless of formats to identify the needed data. 9-11 – We will never forget!

9-11 – We will never forget!Ten years ago today, our country was ruthlessly attacked by a band of terrorists intent on causing harm and suffering to as many innocent people as they could touch. Their meticulously planned terror created vast destruction and loss of life. In consequence, they inflicted pain on our nation and the world as a whole. Their atrocious acts were very pronounced. But the message they delivered was at best muddled. Why did they go through this horrific act? What were they trying to accomplish? Did they perceive tyranny in our freedom? Did they see … Read More

Software Translation Services = Software Localization?

Software Translation Services = Software Localization ?A recent industry blog discussed the need to give translation its due credit. With many companies and conferences in the language service industry promoting localization, it has become habitual to avoid mentioning translation or giving it the credit it deserves.

New entrants in the translation service market are also touting new buzzwords like crowdsourcing and cloud solutions. Offering inexpensive or even free offerings, they claim achieving significant automation, simplification and reduction in cost of software translation services, documents and website translation.

Why the need to use words like localization, crowdsourcing and cloud computing? Simply put, translation is old and not as exciting to analysts and fund-raisers as these … Read More

Think Global and Act Local, but Be Holistic

Think Global and Act Local, but Be HolisticIn the early 90s, while on a trip in Silicon Valley, my car rental sported a new GPS navigation prototype that the rental company was testing. It offered accurate and useful maps while in the San Jose area. But as I drove to visit a relative in Salinas, the GPS navigation display run out of data and displayed nothing but a blank screen with the car icon in the middle and a compass on top, rendering it almost useless and sending me adrift.
Global Positioning Systems (GPS) are very useful but only when local data is available. Despite of the Global name, they are useless without local intelligence!

Similarly, companies … Read More

Professional Translation Company Selection

Professional translation servicesIn the previous blog titled 5 Most Important Factors in Document Translation, we discussed the factors to consider for document translation before you select a professional translation company.
