Heed the Advice – Best practices before localization

Localization adviceI received a call from a client last week informing me of their plans to upgrade their software to a new development environment that is internet enabled. Their concern was to eliminate quality issues that they faced during the last international release. They wanted to learn about the best practices of internationalization (i18n) to make future localization efforts go as smooth as possible.

It is not often that software publishers have the chance to redesign their software from the ground-up with a new development environment, so I was pleased to learn of their initiative and of their proactive efforts toward proper globalization.

Most successful software publishers generate over half of … Read More

Claim a Lane!

Translation Localization VendorI am in Lebanon this week and for those who have been here, you must recall Lebanon’s horrific traffic.

Traffic problems are typically attributed to population explosion, increased appetite for cars, lack of public transportation and archaic infrastructure, all of which Lebanon suffers from. But also much of the misery is self-inflicted by the very bad driving habits (and manners) that Lebanese drivers are notorious for. It is unfortunate that these habits are major contributors to further chaos, serious accidents and frustrating traffic jams.

For those of you who have never been to Lebanon, let me give you an example. Lebanese drivers do not have the concept of a lane. … Read More

Flush Twice to Conserve Water!

City of Two ContinentsRecently GlobalVision released the Window to the World program which enables our clients to reach 90% of their worldwide audience by translating a landing page into 12 languages. Turkish is one of the languages we recommend translating into as Turkey now, with a population of over 70 million strong, generates enough GDP revenue to be number 13 on the language list.

This weekend, I had the opportunity to visit Turkey for the first time. When I deplaned in the City of Two Continents, Istanbul, and as I walked toward passport control, I saw a sign in English saying “Other Nationalities”. There were no other options listed in English. The passport … Read More

Is Customer Service a Lost Art?

Customer ServiceI am in Lebanon this month working with our IT team to get an important new release of our translation management system, gvAccess, out of the door. After a long week of technical discussions and testing, the weekend came, allowing me to take advantage of the 35⁰ Celsius (95⁰ F) temperature and to enjoy the serenity of the Mediterranean Sea.

A friend of mine has a boat docked at La Marina; he invited me to join him. So, in the land of the Phoenicians, why not act like one for a day? When we set off to the marina, my friend called them to notify them of our pending … Read More

Joomla, GlobalSight and Open TM2?!

Hold WaterRecently open source tools were touted as the solution to all translators’ troubles and a plausible replacement to proprietary applications and industry de facto standards.

While GlobalSight and TM2 had their days, opening their source and touting them with Joomla sounds like an attempt to resurrect the dead.

Just ask translators and localizers to tell you what they think of this lethal cocktail. Certainly a triple nightmare to most, if not all.

Which begs the following question: Does open sourcing obsolete tools make them better?

Unless you have a dedicated top notch IT team at your disposal, don’t even think about touching these wares. However, if you have a top … Read More
